About Raleigh

Raleigh is the seat of Wake County and the capital city of North Carolina. It was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer. The city has a land area of 143 square miles. Raleigh served as a Confederate Army headquarters during the American Civil War.

About 459,000 people live in Raleigh. The population increased by at least 13% from 2010 to 2016. The racial composition of the population is 53% white, 29% black, 12% Hispanic, and 4% Asian.

Ninety-one percent of Raleigh residents who are 25 years or older have graduated from high school. Over 49% of residents in this age group have a bachelor’s degree or higher. People in Raleigh earn an average annual wage of $33,700. The median household income is $58,600. Roughly 15% of residents live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Raleigh

Access to appropriate mental health care is a concern for people in Raleigh. Roughly 14% of residents who are age 65 or younger do not have health insurance. Some mental health advocates believe the closing of the Dorothea Dix psychiatric hospital in 2010 has contributed to inadequate resources for county residents with mental health issues.
