Sonoma is a city in Sonoma County, California. The area has a Mediterranean climate and is famous for its vineyards. The city was founded in 1835 by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.

Sonoma has 11,000 inhabitants. Ninety-seven percent of people in the city are American citizens. (The national citizenship rate is 93%.) Foreign-born residents make up 10% of the city population. The ethnic composition of Sonoma is 80% white, 15% Hispanic, and 3% Asian.

There are 5,500 housing units in the city. The median value of a house in Sonoma is $621,100, significantly higher than California’s average of $409,300. Fifty-six percent of families own their home.

Mental Health in Sonoma

Homelessness and mental health are major concerns in the city of Sonoma. The city actively supports Sonoma Overnight Support (SOS)—a local nonprofit organization that provides meals, housing, and mental health services for homeless people in the area. SOS operates the Haven, the only emergency shelter in the county. In 2018, the city of Sonoma provided $20,000 in funding to help keep SOS in local control.

The Haven sees an average of 30 people per day. In 2017, the shelter served more than 33,100 meals and provided individual counseling to homeless individuals in the community. Access to mental health care is a concern for some Sonoma residents. Roughly 13% of people in Sonoma do not have health insurance.
