Addictions, Compulsions, and Self-Sabotage: A Multi-level Approach to Trauma's Legacy

Presented by Dusty Miller, EdD on 11-07-2008 at 9 a.m. Pacific to 10:30 a.m. Pacific (1:30 p.m. Eastern)

How do we help people in therapy whose old ghosts lurk beneath the current challenges of addictions, compulsions and self-sabotage? Survivors of traumatic experience, neglect, and loss often develop patterns of addiction, compulsive behavior, and self-sabotage. Their attempts to mediate chronic distress and loneliness generate new cycles of self-harm, impacting their biochemistry, cognitive functioning and relational connectedness. Too often, this person becomes a "hot potato," shuttled back and forth among frustrated clinicians, addiction specialists, psychopharmacology experts, medical personnel, and alternative healers. Those seeking treatment and helpers alike become increasingly helpless and hopeless.

This presentation offers new assessment tools and successful intervention strategies to address the complications of co-occurring disorders. Participants will learn how to integrate their current skills and perspectives with new constructs and intervention tools designed to address the problems generated by complex trauma, loss and childhood neglect. Participants will be enabled to develop new intervention plans to use with very challenging clients. The seminar will introduce participants to the ATRIUM model, a cognitive behavioral and relational approach to addiction and trauma recovery, and the ARC model for working with relationship problems. Participants will also learn new methods to enhance their own resilience in response to demanding treatment challenges.
