Individuals can be addicted to many things: drugs, gambling, technology, and so on. Substance abuse is particularly common in the United States. In 2014, around 20.2 million adults had a substance abuse disorder. 16.3 million of these adults abused alcohol, while 6.2 million were addicted to illicit drugs.
Addiction can affect not only the individual, but also their family and friends. Around 62% of psychologists provide addiction-related services at least occasionally in their practice. Some professionals, such as social workers, may need continuing education units (CEUs) in substance abuse in order to fill state licensing requirements.
GoodTherapy offers CEUs in substance abuse and other addictions. Some online courses focus on how addiction and mental health interact, while others may focus on how addiction affects certain populations. Continuing education can broaden your knowledge and skill sets, giving you tools to effectively treat addiction.
