Diagnosis rates for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been climbing steadily in recent years, jumping from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 59 children in 2014. Autism awareness is also on the rise. It’s more likely than ever that as a mental health clinician, you will work with an autistic individual at some point in your career.
As people with ASD fall on a broad spectrum in terms of ability to communicate with others and function in day-to-day life, the mental health professionals who work with them may need to develop a wide range of skills or learn more about the condition in order to to work with a subsection of people with ASD, such as high or low functioning individuals. For instance, therapists who work with autistic people may help them learn to regulate emotion, cope with anxiety, or learn communication skills.
A plethora of resources exist for professionals who want to deepen their understanding of how to best help people with autism. Continuing education is one easy way to learn about ASD while earning CEUs that fulfill your state’s requirements for license renewal.
