Preventing Teen Suicide

Presented by Dr. Lisa Firestone on 06-15-2023 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

America is experiencing a youth mental health crisis. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that suicide risk increased in all adolescents. Suicide attempts by girls have increased 30%. LGBTQ+ teens are three times as likely to consider suicide.

For therapists, suicide is an occupational hazard that can be both emotionally and practically devastating. In this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will focus on the current standard of care for crisis intervention and treatment of suicidal adolescents and discuss ways clinicians can implement state of the art crises interventions for suicidal teens. Dr. Firestone will also share the latest research and evidence-based practices.

This introductory level continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Recognize innovative and effective suicide therapies.
  2. Describe warning signs for adolescent suicide.
  3. List at least two evidence-based suicide prevention practices.

Statement of program material’s accuracy, utility, and risks: The material in this course is based on empirically-validated contemporary research. A body of research surveyed in this course suggests that the methods are effective. However, misapplication of the concepts with various populations could lead to unintended outcomes. Course references will be provided by the presenter.

Please note: This training discusses suicide and suicidal ideation, and some people might find it disturbing. If you or someone you know is suicidal, please contact your physician or therapist, go to your local Emergency Room, or call the suicide prevention hotline in your country. For the United States, you can call or text 988. The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, free, and confidential support for people in distress.
