About Calgary

Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, Canada. It has a population of 1.4 million people, a 15% increase from 2011. Calgary is the fastest growing city in Canada. Twenty-nine percent of all residents are immigrants.

Calgary is situated more than 3,400 feet above sea level. The climate is dry, windy, and cool. It is home to the first wind-powered public transit system in North America, known as the C-train.

The city’s economy relies heavily on the oil industry. Falling oil prices resulted in a 2% decrease in the city’s economy in 2015. Approximately 16,000 jobs were lost between September 2015 and September 2016.

Since then, the city has “bounced back” financially. Calgary is one of the wealthiest cities in Canada. Its residents have the country’s fourth highest average wage ($32.60 per hour). Seventy-three percent of households own their own homes.

Mental Health in Calgary

Although Calgary has a robust health care system, the rapidly growing population means there is an increasing shortage of health care services. People who arrive in Calgary may have to wait up to three months to receive an Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan card. It is recommended that individuals consider private health insurance during the waiting period.

The recent decline in the Alberta’s economy has had a significant impact on the mental health of residents. The Calgary Counseling Center reports the demand for counseling services has steadily increased since the recession in 2014. The center provided approximately 36,300 hours of counseling to Calgary residents in 2017. A 3-5% increase is expected in 2018.
