Located in Miami-Dade County, Miami is home to more than 460,000 people. Roughly 9.1% of Miami-Dade residents experience serious mental illnesses (schizophrenia, bipolar, major depression), yet fewer than 13% of these individuals receive care in the public mental health system.
Florida's Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) program's Southern Region contracts with the South Florida Behavioral Health Network (SFBHN) to service both Monroe and Miami-Dade counties. For the years 2011 and 2012, the SFBHN provided care to more than 24,000 adults in the region with serious mental illness. Another 2,000 adults and approximately 15,000 children in the region received service for mental health problems. More than 5,000 children and nearly 13,000 adults living in the southern region received treatment for substance abuse issues. In all, more than 387,000 area residents benefited from services provided by the SAMH system of care, including prevention services, mental health services, and substance abuse services.
