Mental health conditions are a common issue in New Brunswick. Around one in eight residents have had a depressive episode in their lifetime. Roughly one in ten New Brunswickers will experience generalized anxiety. These prevalence rates are similar to those of Canada at large. However, the prevalence rates of PTSD and psychosis (0.7% each) in New Brunswick are both half the national rates.
Youth in New Brunswick (ages 0 to 18) also have mental health issues. The most recent data show the rate of mental health hospitalizations as 64 per 10,000 youths. Roughly half of youths seeking mental health care will get appropriate treatment within 30 days.
Between 2010 and 2012, New Brunswick had a suicide rate of 13.8 deaths per 100,000 people. It had the highest suicide rate of any province in Canada. Around half of suicide deaths in the province are of people ages 40-60.
In 2017, New Brunswick saw 36 deaths from opioids, a rate of 4.7 per 100,000 residents. This rate is lower than that of most other provinces. Twice as many people died from fentanyl in 2017 than the year before. On a positive note, 152 people in New Brunswick were saved by naloxone (a drug that can reverse overdoses) that same year.
