About Amherst
Amherst is a town in Erie County, New York. The area initially belonged to the Seneca nation (part of the Iroquois Confederacy). The Seneca nation ceded control of the area at the Big Tree Treaty in 1797. New York state established the town of Amherst in 1818. The town was named after Sir Jeffrey Amherst, an officer in the British army.
Amherst has 126,000 inhabitants. The town is home to 6,900 military veterans. Roughly 95% of residents age 25 or older have graduated from high school. Fifty-four percent of residents in this age group have a bachelor’s degree.
People in Amherst earn a mean annual wage of $38,800. The median household income is $71,100. Seventy-one percent of families in Amherst own their home. Ten percent of residents live in poverty.
Mental Health in Amherst
The Family Assessment and Support Team (FAST) offers mental health services to youth within the Amherst Central School District. Both individual and family counseling are available. FAST offers treatment for eating disorders, gambling addiction, and other conditions.
