Houston Mental Health Statistics

Anyone can experience mental health challenges. In Harris county, as many as 1 in 4 people may have some form of a mental health issue. According to the Houston State of Health, 12.4% of Houston adults reported experiencing 14 or more days of poor mental health in the most recent month and 11.2% of adults in Houston experienced frequent mental distress. A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that on average, 36.5% of Houston adults got less than 7 hours of sleep per night, which can significantly impact mental health.

Nearly 5% of Harris county residents experience major depression, and from 2012 to 2014, 10.8% of youth had a major depressive episode. In the same time frame, 10.5 out of every 100,000 people died by suicide. Meanwhile, over 18% of people in Harris county experience some form of an anxiety disorder. While these numbers indicate a need for mental health resources for many in Houston, they also show that it is not uncommon to deal with a mental health issue.
