About Alexandria

Alexandria is an independent city in the state of Virginia. It covers 15 square miles and is home to 156,000 people. From April 2010 to July 2016, the population increased by 11%. The ethnic make-up of the population is 66% white, 23% black, 17% Hispanic, and 7% Asian. Roughly 28% of the people who live in Alexandria are foreign-born. Mental Health in Alexandria

In 2018, the city of Alexandria announced a new mental health initiative to help residents with mental health concerns who have been accused of criminal activity. This initiative aims to identify the underlying reasons for these types of crimes. It directs individuals with mental health issues to treatment instead of jail when possible.

The Department of Community and Human Services offers residents in Alexandria the opportunity to receive Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. This eight-hour training program provides certification to laypersons and paraprofessionals. It teaches individuals how to assist those who are developing a mental health concern or experiencing a crisis.
