About Hampton

Hampton is an independent city in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. It is situated at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and is one of seven cities that make up Hampton Roads. Hampton was founded in 1610 and is one of America’s oldest cities. 

Since the early 17th century, Hampton has served as an important military base. The headquarters for the United States Continental Army Command (Fort Monroe) and the Langley Air Force Base are both located in the city. Roughly 19,200 military veterans live in Hampton.

Hampton has a population of 135,000 people. The population is 49% black, 40% white, 5% Hispanic, and 2% Asian. Over 98% of people in the community are American citizens. Seven percent of residents speak a foreign language at home. The most common foreign languages in Hampton are Spanish, Vietnamese, and Arabic.

In Hampton, the median household income is $49,900. The homeownership rate is 56%. Roughly 16% of people in Hampton live below the poverty line. 

Mental Health in Hampton

Opioid addiction is a major issue in Hampton Roads. In 2017, an estimated 230 people in the region died from an opioid overdose. While this number was lower than the 2016 figure, it was more than twice the number of opioid-related deaths reported a decade ago. In 2007, a reported 107 individuals died as a result of opioid overdose.

In response to the rising rate of overdose deaths, the Hampton Police Department has been equipped with Narcan kits. Narcan is a drug that reverses the effects of opioid overdose. Hampton officers also have access to Crisis Intervention Training. This is a voluntary 40-hour program that teaches officers how to effectively handle situations involving individuals with mental health issues.
