About Leesburg

Leesburg is the seat of Loudoun County, Virginia. Originally called George Town, the name was changed to Leesburg in 1758.  The town was incorporated in 1813. Leesburg has a land area of 12 square miles. 

Leesburg has 52,600 inhabitants. The population increased by 23% from 2010 to 2016. Eighty-eight percent of residents are American citizens (compared to 93% of people nationwide). 

Foreign-born people make up 22% of the population. The ethnic composition of Leesburg is 63% white, 17% Hispanic, 9% Asian, and 7% black. Twenty-seven percent of residents have a native language that is not English. Leesburg is home to 6,500 Spanish speakers and 700 Tagalog speakers.

Leesburg has 16,300 households. The median household income is $102,100. The homeownership rate is 70%. Roughly 6% of residents live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Leesburg

The Town of Leesburg has had a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Assessment Center since 2015. If police officers encounter a resident experiencing a mental health crisis, they can bring the resident to the center for treatment. The center is run by emergency services staff from the Loudoun County Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Developmental Services.

The center offers a safe place for residents in crisis to stabilize. A mental health professional may evaluate the individual for psychiatric diagnoses. Staff may then connect the resident to appropriate resources. 

Access to care is a concern for some people in Leesburg. Eleven percent of residents do not have health insurance.
