Lexington is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It has a land area of 16 square miles. Lexington was first settled in 1640 and incorporated in 1713. The first battle of the American Revolution took place in Lexington.

Lexington has 31,400 inhabitants. The ethnic composition of Lexington is 69% white, 25% Asian, 2% Hispanic, and 1% black. Eighty percent of residents age 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree.

Mental Health in Lexington

Youth mental health is an important issue in Lexington. In 2017, residents were encouraged to enroll in an 8-hour course to become certified in youth mental health first aid. The course was geared toward any adults that spend time with youth on a daily basis, such as teachers or parents. 

The course taught adults how to identify youth substance use and mental health issues. Participants also learned a five-step action plan for supporting young people in a mental health crisis. In addition to substance abuse, the course also covered self-harm, anxiety, eating and food issues, and depression.
