About Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is the seat of Kent County, Michigan. The city was originally a trading post located at the crossroads of several Ottawa Indian trails. The trails converged at the rapids on the Grand River. 

Grand Rapids has over 196,000 residents. The racial composition of the population is 59% white, 20% black, 16% Hispanic, and 2% Asian. Approximately 19,800 Spanish speakers live in Grand Rapids.

Almost one third of residents over the age of 25 have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The median household income is $42,000. Over 25% of Grand Rapids residents live below the poverty line.

Grand Rapids is known for its art scene, food scene, and manufacturing industry. The city hosts an open, international art competition called ArtPrize which attracts 1,400 artists and 25,000 visitors each year. In 2017, the World Food Travel Association ranked Grand Rapids as the 2nd best food and beverage destination experience worldwide. Although Grand Rapids has a diverse manufacturing industry, it is called “Furniture City” due to its large production of office and residential furniture.

Mental Health in Grand Rapids

Drug use is one of the most pressing concerns in Kent County. There were 93 confirmed drug overdoses in the county in 2016. Of these deaths, 15 were classified as suicide, 77 were determined to be accidents, and one was indeterminate. About two-thirds of the deceased were between the ages of 21 and 44. 

In 2016, nearly 42% of the overdoses were due to narcotic/analgesic drugs. Fentanyl accounted for 20 of the 39 narcotic/analgesic-related deaths. Heroin and methadone were also common in overdose cases.

In 2017, Kent County experienced 124 overdose deaths, the highest overdose tally in the county’s record.
