Cary is a North Carolina town located in both Wake County and Chatham County. It has a land area of 54 square miles. Money Magazine listed Cary as one of the “Best Small Cities in America.” 

Cary has a population of 166,000 people. The number of residents increased by 22% from 2010 to 2017. Around 90% of the people in Cary are American citizens, compared to a nationwide rate of 93%.

The racial composition of Cary is 65% white, 15% Asian, 8% black, and 8% Hispanic. Foreign-born people account for 20% of the population. Twenty-two percent of residents have a native language other than English. Cary is home to 8,600 Spanish speakers, 4,000 Chinese speakers, and 2,900 Hindi speakers.

People in Cary earn a mean annual salary of $43,900. The median household income is $94,600, one of the highest in the state. The homeownership rate in Cary is 68%. Around 6% of residents live in poverty.

Mental Health in Cary

Drug addiction is a major concern in the town of Cary. In 2017, there were 46 cases of opioid overdose, six of which resulted in death. This represents a 70% increase in overdoses compared to the previous year. 

Town officials have taken various steps to tackle the substance abuse problem in Cary. Since 2016, 140 law enforcement officers have been trained in the use of Narcan—a drug used for overdose reversal. There are also plans to test Cary’s wastewater to determine which drugs are being used in the town as well as which neighborhoods are using them the most.
