My Approach to Helping

My name is Amy Howard, I am an LCSW practicing in the State of Florida. I am based in Sarasota, and depending on whether you are a local or statewide client, can meet in person, via telehealth, or a combination of both. My client base ranges from 3 - 93 years old, the central modality is Rogerian from there we branch into therapies that best suit your needs. In other words, we start where you are and progress from there. I am here to help you; therefore, therapeutic compatibility is a strong point. Initially, we meet for a session to see how we get on, or more accurately, if you feel comfortable enough with me to want to move forward. Once we've established a base of safety and trust, I begin with CBT then initiate additional techniques such as TF-CBT, EMDR, or Biofeedback, as appropriate.

I work with adolescents through adults treating trauma and trauma-related conditions (PTSD), anxiety, depression, co-dependency, and SMI disorders, such as MDD, Bi-Polar, PanicAnxiety attacks. My aim is to integrate appropriate skills and techniques that will support your goals and establish a foundation of favorable expectations. I strive to create and provide a safe, empathetic, and supportive environment. Clients have told me that they initially felt relaxed, that the session felt more like a talk than a therapy session, that they feel heard, that it was empowering to be a part of the process, and that working with me is like working with a close friend.

My journey began 35 years ago on a dock in upstate New York. I met a woman who seemed very sad, and so, I asked her if she wanted to talk. She hesitated and I explained that after all, we were strangers, and we would likely never cross paths again. We talked for about 2 hours. When we said goodbye, she paused and said, "Thank you for helping me, things look better now". The rest is an account of gaining knowledge and experience so that I can help life look better for as many people as possible. Your goals are my goals. We will work together to define your needs and navigate the paths to reach those objectives, after all, you are here to attain your most favorable life. As therapy proceeds, we will revisit those goals and evaluate your progress, adjusting accordingly to stay on track.

Our first session is about getting to know each other. The discussion is centered on what brought you to seek help and to ask any questions you might have about the process, about me, or anything else you would like to bring up. It is mainly to ensure you feel comfortable and want to move forward with me. My name is Amy Howard, I am an LCSW practicing in the State of Florida.
