More Info About My Practice
I am certified as a Level 4 practitioner of TEAM CBT therapy through The Feeling Good Institute, which is based on the work of Dr. David Burns, a leading expert in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I incorporate TEAM CBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to tailor the therapeutic approach to each individual's personality, issues, and learning styles. This personalized method ensures that the therapy is as effective and responsive to each person's unique needs as possible.
My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'
I was initially taught to view depression and anxiety through the medical model, which frames these conditions as simply a chemical imbalance requiring antidepressant medications. However, I now understand that the reality is much more complex. Many people respond better to therapy as a long-term solution. Life inevitably brings problems and complications that cause distress, and learning to cope with them and understand their root causes is crucial for long-term recovery. For example, losses are an inherent part of the human experience, yet society often teaches us to "get back to work and stay busy" to move past them. I believe that changing how we think and behave is much more effective, especially concerning controllable losses. One of my favorite books on this subject is "Lost Connections" by Johann Hari. I also highly recommend Feeling Great by Dr. David Burns as a self-help resource that I find invaluable! With over 25 years of experience in psychiatric evaluations, I can recognize and diagnose when individuals need psychiatric care that extends beyond my scope of practice.
The Duration and Frequency of Therapy
The duration and frequency of therapy are as unique as each individual. I typically recommend weekly sessions for the first month to establish the best working relationship possible. For those who are committed to the process and willing to engage in work outside of our sessions, therapy duration tends to be shorter compared to those seeking primarily a supportive relationship. Ultimately, the frequency and intensity of therapy are decisions left to the individual, couple, or family, based on their goals and readiness to engage. I also promise to be honest if I feel I cannot help and will provide referrals to ensure they receive the best possible care.
