My Approach to Helping
Need a safe space to work through challenges in confidence? Troubled by relationships, parenting, school or work? Fighting anxiety, depression or life-limiting rules or patterns? Ready for a new beginning?
Our experience is shaped by habits and expectations that are maintained by loyalty to important relationships, and by confirming experience. They affect our relationships, success, and happiness.
Therapy can help. Hurtful habits and expectations can be retired, and new ones can be implicitly learned, or chosen and implemented. My practice of therapy is as diverse as my clients, following their deep and increasingly explicit goals, and their changing preferences.
Growing out of shyness and an early focus on math, physics and neuroscience, my own journey is one of growing safety, emotional presence and integration of body, thought and feeling, while letting go of old habits of emotional survival.
In over twenty years as a therapist, I have worked with people facing grief, displacement, growing up, parenting, generational differences, career transitions, work organization and communication, substances, sexual preference, learning disorders, ADHD, multiple stressors, depression, anxiety, abuse, neglect, and relationship issues. Clients often fear that their problems will be overwhelming, but even when experiences are frustrating, grim or frightening, sharing them in therapy can be relieving and enlivening. Alternatives then become possible.
