My Approach to Helping
My name is April Hayes and I am a seasoned Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I work with a wide range of clients and guide them in improving their strengths on various issues. When I'm not providing therapy, I enjoy spending time with my culturally diverse and active family. I don't believe that one size fits all, so I like exploring what client's goals are and working with them on the best approach to meet their goals. As an eclectic therapist, I typically pull from humanistic and existential philosophies while being solution-focused.
I have experience working with a wide range of clients including, adults, children, Veterans, LGBTQ+, and a wide variety of cultures and often when English is their second language. My primary focus has been working with people who have experienced various types of traumas which often manifest in a variety of ways such as anger, anxiety, depression, isolation, panic attacks, etc. As a soft-spoken therapist, I am adept at listening while asking questions to assure understanding of client's internal and external situations. I want my clients to feel comfortable to discuss anything without them feeling embarrassed. I believe there is to be an expectation of mutual respect between therapist and client.
Like many therapists, I have had my share of challenging experiences that I have successfully dealt with which has driven me to help others manage challenges. This has given me the opportunity to connect with clients on a deeper level whereas clients have shared with me that they believe I truly understand their experiences. These situations have given me extensive experience in advocating for victims of trauma as an expert witness in court settings.
I believe it is important to work together as a team to determine goals and how we will determine if goals are met. In addition, over time an understanding that goals sometimes shift. A first session is typically an information-gathering session, whereas clients express why they decide to explore therapy and what their expectations may be. In addition, this therapist will express that the sessions are for the client and to meet their needs while anytime they have an urgent situation that they feel needs to be addressed will be addressed first.
