My Approach to Helping
My name is Beth Ann Meyer. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who works with you to reach your goals by using your current strengths, supports, and coping skills and adding to them during therapy sessions and real-world application between sessions regardless of your situation. I am here to assist you along life's journey, whether that is a time of change, loss, stress, maintaining, or moving forward.
I approach every session from a person-centered (focused on you), strengths-based (yes, you have some) stance. I find that solutions-focused therapy creates an environment that allows us to acknowledge the effects of the past without becoming mired down by them. Within the solutions-focused framework, I utilize many techniques from the Cognitive-Based Therapy (CBT) handbook.
I enjoy working with individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. In the telehealth (online) setting, therapy works best when you are ready to make changes or at least willing to consider making adjustments to get different results.
I work together with you in a collaborative conversation. I don't provide an hour of silence without feedback; I also don't give a classroom lecture. We work together on setting goals that reflect your desires and expectations for life. I provide you with tools, focused questions, and space to reach those goals within a safe therapeutic relationship.
What an honor to be present in someone's life while they work out the whats, hows, and whys! What a rush to be a part of that moment when someone sees their own possibilities!
You set the goals for our time together. I guide you through the goal-setting process with questions and feedback to solidify where you would like to go with therapy and help you move in that direction. Goal-setting is an ongoing conversation that can be adjusted as new ideas, hopes, and challenges present themselves.
In our first session, we will take time for you to tell me a little about your history and a lot about what caused you to seek counseling. By the end of the first session, we will have identified a goal or two and discussed how you want to proceed. I usually give you some information to review or a task to try over the following week, so you can start moving toward your goal from the first session. I will also answer questions you may have about the therapy process or my approach. I want you to feel comfortable with the process and to have space to grow within our therapeutic relationship.
