My Approach to Helping
As a psychotherapist for 4 decades, I recognize how vital it is to honor each client as an individual and to show that client how to recognize and reveal thoughts and emotions. Clear communication with others is essential. Feelings and events impact us in such drastic ways. Knowledge of the "pause" and respect towards destiny are essential. I include and invite any immediate or non family members who are intricately involved in the client's life. Transparency, negotiation, and acceptance are key therapeutic words. One's reaction to life events is a choice. Whether in the mind, emotions, or spirit, everything is possible.
I work with children over the of age 8, or younger if the issues are related to other family members ie. Discipline. The populations I serve are: children, adolescent, family, and marital counseling. Some specialty issues I help are grief and sorrow, disability, sexuality, and the connection between physical and mental health. Ie. Diabetes can be spurred on by sorrow. Therapy modalities that I use include Gestalt, Adlerian, EMDR, Christian, Hypnosis, and Family Systems Therapy. I, also, give homework, whether behavioral, written, or reading assignments, that a client can do outside the session. In my experience mere talk is not enough and the client needs to practice and experience changes outside the therapy session.
Because I feel a therapist should not interfere but enhance an individual or family's life I am willing to schedule extended hours: weekday afternoon and evening, plus some Saturday morning appointments. For no additional charge. Good thing I am a night owl!
I do 'in person' therapy. I only do Telehealth when my client is already established in therapy with me and is out of town or ill. I do not believe deep issues or complex techniques can be effective in any way but in person. Being a solo practitioner my work was not diminished by the pandemic so it might be necessary to make an appointment a few weeks in advance.
I, also, am available to all my clients on an emergency basis.
