My Approach to Helping
My name is Brittany Williams. I am an LPC in Virginia and I mostly use cognitive-behavioral therapy. I enjoy working with a wide range of people of all ages and conditions from kids to teenagers to adults to older adults, who are experiencing anything from depression to anxiety to life changes such as grief and loss or anything in between! I look forward to working with you!
I usually use cognitive-behavioral therapy to work through thought processes and create behavioral change. I teach a lot of coping skills that we practice in-session and clients can then use them outside in real-life to create actual change.
I have worked with clients of all ages but enjoy mostly working with kids and teenagers. I feel like they have a lot going on in life that is very difficult to navigate and can have a lot of depression and anxiety on top of everything else.
I tend to ask a lot of open-ended questions. That gives the client an opportunity to go where they feel like they need to during a session, and I follow them there.
I took an intro to Psychology class in community college and was hooked. I decided at that point to major in psychology in college and from there obtained my Master's in Counselor Education and went on to go through my counseling residency. I had a lot of grief growing up and when I was a teenager, everyone around me was dying and I wanted to be able to help people through that sort of thing when I got older, so here I am!
We set goals during the first session, and look back over them during subsequent sessions to see progress and make sure we're on the right track.
During a first session, I typically ask a lot of questions to get background information and learn who the client is as a person, and learn about their routine and symptoms. We also set goals and discuss any questions or concerns they may have about the process moving forward.
