My Approach to Helping
Deaf Counseling Center believes in the power of therapists and clients working together as equals to address client challenges.
We offer therapy that is existential-humanistic in orientation and Deaf-centered. We're conscious of the ways Deaf people's lives and identities are shaped by their membership in a cultural and linguistic minority. We prioritize the importance of the client-therapist relationship.
We support and encourage our clients to gain awareness of their innermost selves and to recover facts about themselves they may have forgotten or lost. We explore clients' experience and understanding of their current challenges, and support them as they experiment with alternative ways of being. We place strong emphasis on the present, but we look to the past when it can offer clarity into current struggles.
We also use techniques from other therapeutic orientations, such as desensitization and dream analysis, where appropriate.
