My Approach to Helping

Is your heart Broken? Lost? Stuck? Did a divorce or the end of a romantic relationship cause it? Have you experienced a toxic relationship? Or have you experienced death by suicide, homicide, overdose, or pet loss? Utilizing my education in grief therapy, my profession as a Hospice Social Worker for 18 years, and my own experience with losses has given me a deeper understanding of and insight into bereavement.

Areas of focus include anticipatory grief, traumatic death, loss of health, grief anxiety, and life transitions. Grief Therapy is short-term with a clear focus on goals, utilizing strategies and techniques from various therapeutic practices to meet grievers where they are and offer an impactful learning experience. Grief is the natural response to loss and doesn't have a time limit. Grief doesn't go away completely, but we change our relationship. You can expect reading and homework assignments for each session to assist in the therapeutic process. I have been trained in Complicated Grief Treatment and EMDR; I am a Certified Grief Recovery Method Specialist, a Certified Grief Counseling Specialist, a Fellow in Thanatology, trained in Narcissistic and Psychopathic Abuse, and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.

My goal for each therapeutic relationship is to encourage authenticity and support individual strengths and goals in a safe, empathic, and nonjudgmental environment. I am here as a guide to help you navigate and teach you how to cope with the loss, with supportive guidance every step of the way. I focus on promoting healing milestones and addressing stuck points in adapting to loss using active listening and personalized interventions with specific tools to help you cope.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

My journey with grief started my first year in college when my boyfriend was killed in an automobile accident. I regretted that I never had the chance to say goodbye. Ironically, I was taking my first Death and Dying class then. This provided a certain level of help, but our college campus did not have much grief support in the 1980s. His death made me realize how unprepared I was to cope with my grief and the pain of loss. All my hopes, dreams, and expectations were gone!
My next significant loss was that of my 42-year-old sister, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. This experience, while heartbreaking, taught me invaluable lessons in supporting a loved one through their end-of-life journey. With the help of hospice, I was able to navigate my anticipatory grief and find solace in bereavement support. This transformative experience led me to a career in hospice care, a path I continue to follow to this day, providing support to adult grievers.
In addition, having experienced a toxic relationship in the '90s and not understanding what that was, I made the decision to be trained in Narcissistic and Psychopathic Abuse to help others.

Groups I Work With

I work with adults 18+ and Seniors who have found themselves struggling with their grief. Grief is the conflicting feelings caused by the end of, or change in, a familiar pattern of behavior. Over 43 losses are considered grief. Here are some examples: death, divorce, loss of health, loss of career, loss of trust, loss of approval, loss of safety, loss of faith, loss of fertility, loss of control of my body, empty nest, financial change, future hopes, dreams and or expectations of a relationship.

Whether you're just beginning to notice the first signs of narcissistic manipulation or still trying to make sense of an abusive relationship, you've already left and want to learn coping strategies to manage mental health symptoms, practice setting healthy boundaries, and explore ways to rebuild your sense of self.
