My Approach to Helping
Dr. Cabral is a NYS licensed clinical psychologist. As a psychologist Dr. Cabral sees their role as both to help you to let a gust of fresh air into the stuffy corners of your mind and stand with you as you encounter the parts of yourself that you have not met. In this way Dr. Cabral makes therapy a place where you can become the most authentic version of yourself by helping to clarify your values and discover how past traumas may shape the ways in which you currently move through the world.
As an Afro-Caribbean, non-binary psychologist, Dr. Cabral finds that they incorporate the the wisdom of Dominican “dichos,” or aphorisms they grew up with into the therapeutic landscape. They also enrich concepts of building life worth living by committing to queer joy and gender euphoria. As someone whose personal experience often brings them into “in-between” spaces, Dr. Cabral is comfortable helping others navigate what can at once be painful and also excellent and meaningful.
Dr. Cabral has extensive training and experience across community based school settings, settings focused on academic research and clinical care for queer and gender diverse clients, and partial hospitalization programs. As such they are able to support adults, adolescents and families who are struggling to manage trauma, depression, and anxiety. Dr. Cabral believes in meeting clients with compassion, humor, cultural humility and a genuine interest in their treatment goals. They use an integrative approach, including Motivational Interviewing, DBT, CBT, and trauma-focused interventions
