My Approach to Helping
Hello, I’m a master’s prepared Independently licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I look forward to helping individuals as they work to heal and develop skills that will help them help themselves.
I like to meet people where they are with regard to the symptoms and issues they bring to therapy. I am partial to Rogerian theories and the need to provide impartiality and positive regard for others. My foundation includes thinking in terms of systems, especially family systems, and how those systems may influence us. I believe change can be difficult and not impossible.
Currently, my practice consists of individual adults. Often, these folks are navigating a significant life transition andor working through trauma from the past that seems to interfere with current life experiences and well-being. Disorders these individuals bring with them include depression, anxiety, various identity issues, and post-traumatic stress.
I have been told by past clients that they feel like they can say what they need to say in session without the fear of being judged. I encourage the client’s empowerment where I can.
I first became drawn to psychology and human behavior while I was still a student in high school. When I began my undergraduate degree I experienced a very powerful event that prompted me to change my major to psychology. After gaining some life experience I returned to complete a master’s degree in education with a focus on Marital and Family Therapy. I have had the great fortune to witness individuals transform their lives as they actively participate in mental health therapy and that’s what keeps me motivated to continue practicing.
Setting goals for therapy will take into account a broad aim for stabilizing symptoms the client has prioritized and then narrowing that down to objectives and interventions to reach the goal. Activities will be discussed and agreed upon by both the client and the therapist.
The first session will collect information about the symptoms and issues the client is struggling with. Medical need for treatment, or not, will be determined and a diagnosis will be applied. At least one goal, objective, and intervention will be identified by the end of the session.
