Drug use is an important issue in Coral Gables. The city has partnered with Covanta Dade Renewable Energy to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs in an environmentally safe manner. A drop-off bin is located in the lobby area of the Coral Gables Police Department. This service is intended to reduce the misuse of prescription drugs in the city. So far the city has disposed of over 140 pounds of prescription drugs.

The city of Coral Gables has also established an alcohol and drug-free workplace program. City employees are prohibited from using, possessing, or being under the influence of these substances while engaged in city work.
