My Approach to Helping
Hello my name is Eric Lopez. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I take a client-centered approach to therapy, carefully building trust and rapport, understanding that the therapeutic relationship is the key to counseling. I use cognitive behavioral techniques along with some other modalities in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, addictions, bipolar disorder, psychosis, trauma, and other disordersconditions.
A solid, open, comfortable, trusting therapeutic relationship is essential to counseling. Cognitive behavioral therapy provides a good evidence based framework as a foundation from which to process thoughts which affect emotions and behaviors. Motivational interviewing and narrative therapy are approached I also draw from. I have treated a wide range of conditions both in person and via telehealth including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, adjustment disorder, trauma and others. I am ready to treat all clients, but especially those who are open to doing the work of therapy and gaining clarity and motivation to make progress.
I like for a client to feel at ease working with me, knowing that they feel heard and hopefully understood. Clients should feel a degree of hope for the present and the future after a session. At first, psychology courses at the University of Florida were a way of understanding myself better. I discovered my love for helping people over the years. I continue to develop my skills as a counselor and truly enjoy engaging people and seeing them make progress in their lives.
I listen to understand a client's values and help them to set their own goals which are measurable and attainable. Our first session will set the tone for therapy as I begin to get to know you, your style of communicating, and your reasons for accessing therapy. I endeavor to make it as enjoyable as possible.
