My Approach to Helping

Does it feel as though you're going through life without a sense of equilibrium? Do seemingly routine tasks fill you with dread and anxiety? Are you filled with a sense of hopelessness, that things will never get better, and do you feel guilty for even thinking this way? These are patterns that I am very familiar with, and I want to help you to uncover the root causes of them, as well as give you tools that will help you build healthier habits.

We often have a narrative we tell ourselves that we think covers the full story of our lives, and determines our future. Does this sound familiar? I find that by simply listening actively to clients and pointing out when their story sounds incomplete or unfair, we can work towards creating a new story that includes more hope and self-care. My approach to therapy is highly collaborative, and I feel that building a strong therapeutic relationship is fundamental in providing relief to what troubles you. I want to hear anything and everything about you, no matter how random or irrelevant it may seem to be at first; often there's great insight in what comes from the unconscious mind, and therapy is a safe space for it to come to the fore. I do love to talk and listen to people talk, but this isn't always the best or fastest way to get to the root of the issue. As a certified music therapist, I can also guide us into creative approaches to the issues at hand.

More Info About My Practice

While I love to talk and listen to you talk, there are times in which language doesn't suffice. In these moments, music can offer unique outlets for expression and communication. I have worked with people of every musical ability, from those that have never touched an instrument, to seasoned performers. If you find music to be soothing, or your identity is reflected in the music you listen to, I will find ways to incorporate it in sessions to provide mental relief.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Anxiety - Anxiety and the physical symptoms that come with it (heart racing, foggy vision, feeling like you'll faint) can be intense. I have worked with people dealing with intense jobs and life transitions, performers, and sufferers of social anxiety. Though the cause may be complex (and we will explore this), I will help with strategies to relieve your specific experience of anxiety.

Depression - One of the worst things about depression (and there are many bad things) is the way that it pushes you to suffer alone. "I don't want to bring people down" or "I shouldn't feel this way, everything is fine" are the types of thoughts that push you to isolate, where depression can really get its hooks in. I will help to dispel this sense of guilt and shame. Depression doesn't define who you are, there is hope.

Relationships - You may notice that there have been patterns in the way that you relate to others throughout your life. What are these patterns and where did they come from? I find that all of my work with individuals inevitably includes considerations for their relationships. I will help build healthier approaches to the patterns we uncover, both in outside relationships and the therapeutic relationship.
