My Approach to Helping
My name is Gene Ira Katz. I hold professional credentials as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Addiction Counselor, and an ABS Board Certified Sex Therapist, among others. My primary therapeutic approach is known as Client-Centered or Rogerian, meaning that it's not my job to 'fix' you but to help you learn how to figure out for yourself how to get to wherever it is that you want to get to. My main areas of focus as a therapist are issues related to human sexuality, desire, gender, and connection.
I am an enthusiastic proponent of Active Listening (also known as Rogerian listening), a style of conversing wherein the client can feel secure that they are being heard and understood. You will find me to be very friendly, supportive, and conversational and I will clearly express myself without technical jargon or 'psychology-speak.' I will always attempt to answer any questions you may have, and you will almost invariably conclude each session feeling that you made some progress and gained further understanding of your situation.
