My Approach to Helping
Hello! My name is Holly Young, LCMHC (licensed clinical mental health counselor). I see therapy as a place where stories can be shared without shame or judgment. That is where healing happens. It is a sacred space to sit in and I am honored every day I get to do this. I primarily provide individual counseling services.
My approach to therapy is authentic, warm, and eclectic. I have
experience in a variety of therapy modalities, with the most often used being person-centered (supportive & empowering), psycho-education, DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), traumasomatic based, briefsolution-focused, art & narrative, and mindfulness, among others.
My focus areas of practice are anxiety, depression, trauma, women's issues, grief & loss, and assertiveness training for teens and adults.
I strive to make sessions a safe, non-judgmental space for all clients. I am all about showing up as the messy humans we are. Kindness and authenticity are super important to me. I am not here to be the person with the fancy degree on the wall telling you what to do - this is a partnership.
I was a paraprofessional working with people (usually teens and adults) who had intellectual andor developmental disabilities for nine years, all through college. I fell in love with working with people and thinking of creative ways to help them thrive. I initially wanted to become a social worker after earning my BA in Sociology from UNCA, but, through pure chance and luck, ended up in a Counseling program instead and realized it was the right place for me :)
What drives me to do this work is...complex. It's several things. Part of it is that I have gone through traumas and have anxiety and depression myself, so I have a lot of empathy and understanding. I also have a therapist myself! Part of it is that I've become a big advocate for mental health for all. Part of it is that I love leaving places, people, and things more beautiful than when I found them.
I meet clients where they are. I work with you to create short and long-term goals that are easily achievable, especially in the beginning, to build up confidence and motivation.
We will complete a full evaluation the first time we meet, going over your history, symptoms, initial diagnoses, and treatment goals. In our first therapy session, I leave space for any questions or concerns clients may have, introduce some tools that I like to use for check-ins and evals and do some fun, get-to-know-you activities.
