How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

My decision to become a psychotherapist is a very personal and tragic one. My great grandfather was a fireman with the New York City Fire Department. He was a brave and good man who battled many fires. My grandfather was a key figure in attempting to save the laborers who died so tragically during the Triangle Shirt Waist Fire in New York City. My grandfather never forgave himself for failing to save those young seamstresses. He fell into a severe depression and had symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress for the rest of his life. His life ended prematurely as his guilt was so tremendous as he committed suicide. My grandmother did whatever she could to provide for a family of 6 young children. She took in laundry, cared for children and cleaned homes. Remember there were no such thing as social services then-no welfare, no food stamps, no public housing, no medicaid---Just the will of a strong and courageous woman to care for her young family. My dad entered the army at 18. He was in active duty for 4 long years in the United States Army with the admiral goal of protecting the freedoms of this country and ending the Nazi takeover of Europe. He was discharged honorably with a Purple Heart for his courage. However my dad suffered with serious post-traumatic stress and developed stress-related physical illnesses including type II diabetes and heart disease. I made a vow to devote my life to ending the suffering I saw my family endure. Please call.
