Kalamazoo is the county seat of Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The city was founded in 1831. It occupies a land area of 25 square miles. 

The population of Kalamazoo increased by 2% between 2010 and 2017. The city has a total of 75,800 residents. An estimated 97% of people in Kalamazoo are American citizens, compared to 93% of people nationwide.

In Kalamazoo, 64% of residents identify as white, 21% as black, 7% as Hispanic, and 2% as Asian. Five percent of city residents were born in a foreign country. Ten percent speak a foreign language at home. The most common non-English languages are Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese.

Mental Health in Kalamazoo

Drug addiction is a major mental health issue in Kalamazoo County. In 2016, hospitals in Kalamazoo County treated an average of 24 people a month for unintentional opioid overdoses. Men required overdose treatment at twice the rate of women. 

In 2016, 80 people died from drug overdoses, which was a 7-year high for the area. 2017’s death toll wasn’t much better, with officials counting 79 drug-related deaths. County officials estimate 2018’s death toll will be even higher, as the first half of the year already saw 44 deaths.
