My Approach to Helping
"Hi, I'm Dr. John Choy! I'm a Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, & Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor based in Redondo Beach, California and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with individuals and couples and specialize in solution-focused therapy for resolving personal issuesdistress and interpersonal discord, actualizing your immense potential to overcome any obstacle, and becoming all you were created to be."
My approach to providing therapy is purpose-driven to broaden your vision and empower you with new perspectives and the tools to co-create with you the steps that will help you achieve your goals. I draw from a broad spectrum of theoretical approaches not limited to cognitive-behavioral, but also enriched with wholistic health and wellness, fitness, nutritional and life coaching, and Christian counseling for those with whom these resources resonate.
I primarily work with individuals and couples, and specialize in solution-focused therapy for resolving personal issuesdistress and interpersonal discord and maximizing your potential to create your best life now. Based on my broad range of professional training and experience, I am uniquely qualified to treat mood, stress, substance abuse, self-esteem, relationships, grief, and life transition issues.
My communication style is to create a positive, accepting, relaxed, yet focused atmosphere by listening intentionally to most fully understand your unique life circumstances and issues. Working with me, you will know that your priorities are my priorities, what's important to you is important to me, and that in co-creating with me the steps to help you achieve your goals, you will feel increasingly empowered with a positive outlook on life and your situation.
Growing up with my eldest brother as a Licensed Psychologist, I was naturally inclined to follow in his footsteps as he modeled the way. Having served for almost a decade as the Chief of Mental Health for one of the largest patient populations in California, my experience as a leader and as a clinician drives me to help those who could use a good listener, a shoulder to lean on, a caring heart, and an encouraging word.
We will have a conversation to explore your vision of the desired outcome you'd like to achieve from working on and resolving the issues that brought you to therapy, what you'd like to achieve from our work together, and mutually setting a realistic timeframe within which to actualize your SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timebound) goals.
We will have a conversation to help me understand you as an individual and the issues and circumstances that brought you to seek therapy, what you would like to achieve from our work together and within what timeframe, and what you can expect out of me as your therapist.
