My Approach to Helping
My therapeutic approach varies based on the needs of the client I work with. I frequently utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness Therapy as these modalities help me and the client to build a shared understanding of their reality and allow us to develop a path forward. I find my style and approach works well with teens and adults alike who may be dealing with past trauma, relationship issues, life transitions, and social pressures. This may take the form of anxiety, depression, and stress. I work to help my clients navigate these challenges and to build skills to address future challenges. My communication style is calm, accommodating and with a bit of humor. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking and sharing with me and I pride myself on the ability to listen without judgement. I decided to become a therapist because I am passionate about helping people. I started my journey as a pastoral counselor, and at one point it occurred to me that counseling would serve as a better career choice as I could possibly assist a wider audience. From that point on my passion has been helping people understand and resolve past traumas, addiction, and personal crises. My approach to goal setting is all about collaborating together to define what you want to accomplish with our time together. This often begins by building a trusting relationship between us, getting comfortable with what it means to be in therapy. Over time we will set goals and track your progress, adjusting the goals as necessary. What you can expect from the first session is an exploration into the current issue and me asking follow-up questions to understand some of why you may be feeling the way you do. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we go from there. Each individual is unique and I like to listen before without assuming I know what will work for you moving forward. I understand not all skills will resonate with every client, so adjustments are constantly made.
