My Approach to Helping

I an enthusiastic believer in the ability of people to fully heal from eating disorder, OCD, and anxiety disorders.

Are you tired of fighting with your own mind? Is your relationship with food, body image, and self-esteem starting to run your life? Are you exhausted at the thought of having to make one more scary decision all by yourself? If you said "yes" to any of these questions, I want you to know that there is hope and that you can build a better life.

My name is Joe Sciarretta and since 2010 I have been helping people with eating disorders, OCD, and anxiety cope with and overcome their painful patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. I am an avidly optimistic therapist for my clients and I believe that anyone, really anyone, can change. I have worked at some of the top eating disorder and mental health treatment centers in the surrounding NJ area. From those experiences I have developed a good clinical intuition on how to help people who are highly motivated, somewhat unsure, or fearful of change.

My practice focuses on a few key therapeutic approaches. I draw heavily on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) and Exposure Therapies, like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD. I am an avid proponent of the 8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder book by Carolyn Costin and Gwen Grabb. I also provide Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD and trauma issues, especially when the coincide with an eating disorder.

My real specialty is in helping people who are unsure of what they want out of recovery. Oftentimes change can be scary, and recovery itself can be challenging (especially at the start). This is why I focus on working with someone 'where they are at'.

If you want to know more, please reach out to my office and have a conversation. I offer free phone consultations and no commitment therapy trials. Start your journey towards feeling better today.

More Info About My Practice

I am a flexible and open-minded practitioner. I offer my clients harm reduction approaches when they are not ready for full recovery. I enjoy helping my clients build resilience and watching them see progress, however small, over time. Sometimes making small changes in one area can even help heal a distant, but related, cooccurring condition: any healthy change is welcome.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

I completely understand how full recovery from many mental health conditions can be an intimidating place to begin the therapy process. That is why I pride myself on taking things at whatever speed my clients want to go. Sometimes people show up ready to change, but other times individuals need time to explore their options and what recovery would look like for them. Helping my clients resolve their dilemmas about change (such as wanting recovery but not wanting to change their appearance) is a natural and healthy part of the therapeutic process. I always tell my clients to bring their "buts" to the process: "I want to change, but this", or "but that". Getting at those underlying concerns can be some of the most important work a client does in therapy.
