My Approach to Helping
In our culture, there is a great expectation that we should be able to handle things on our own, especially when it comes to sadness, worry and stress. This is not always as effective or successful as we hope. We are inherently social beings, and connecting and collaborating with someone through therapy offers a tremendously powerful and valuable opportunity. You don't have to be falling apart to get the support you need. I can bear witness to what you are experiencing and help you consider your thoughts, feelings, and choices, along with their results. It really is possible for you to feel better, and through our work together we'll actively pursue the understanding and change you're hoping for. I offer a safe, comfortable space for you to work through whatever is going on.
Because I have training in several different types of therapy, I can individualize my approach to meet your particular needs and concerns. I work from a cognitive-behavioral perspective because I've seen the tremendous impact of being able to manage our own thinking. We'll begin by establishing your goals, and then we will work towards resolving the pain or stress you are experiencing and improving your understanding of your situation or relationship. At one time or another, we all have thoughts and behaviors that impede our success. In our work together, we will seek to uncover your irrational thoughts and unhelpful behaviors and replace them with skills that serve you better. I want you to be able to sustain the change you create in my office, so I will actively teach you tools and techniques which will enable you to sustain that change.
