My Approach to Helping
I'm Kamala Oruamabo, a Florida-licensed mental health counselor. While I enjoy working with individuals in various areas, my niches are anxiety, depression, and life transition. I utilize person-centered, CBT, and Solution Focus approaches. The most common theoretical approaches I find useful are Person-Centered, CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focus. However, I tailor my approaches to match the needs of the individual. I love working with individuals who are just trying to face situations and find solutions, whether it's peer relations, self-esteem, adjustments to life transitions, etc. TI work with them to instill hope in tough situations through conversation, learning strategies, or more depth approaches. The counseling environment is calm and relaxing. However, humor is allowed.
My journey continues from my early teens. I'm the oldest of a large family. Therapy was not something "we did", so I did not have an outlet for myself. This led to my interest in helping others with their problems. I joined a teen counseling group and from there dibbled and dabbled with mental health. Though other careers caught my interest, I always returned to counseling. So, here I am. Your counselor.
I directly ask the client for up to three goals in working together. If needed, I help them to develop goals. The first session is for the purpose of getting to know the client. I utilize an abbreviated version of a biopsychosocial to learn about the client. This happens in the form of a conversation to help the client feel comfortable with me.
