My Approach to Helping
Hello. I've been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oklahoma for 29 years. I work with clients from the ages of 10 to senior citizens and believe people of all ages can make changes to improve their lives.
I use an eclectic approach to therapy which varies from client to client. I use a strengths-based approach to assist clients in recognizing and utilizing their own capabilities to make changes. I am non-judgmental and an active listener. I think learning new coping and mindfulness skills can be beneficial.
I work with many different issues including depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, family issues, personality disorders, PTSD, and psychosis. I try to make my clients feel comfortable. I want them to address what is on their mind and usually allow them to steer the direction of the session. I don't believe in pushing anyone to talk about something they aren't ready or willing to process. If we're doing something that isn't helpful, I want my clients to be comfortable letting me know so we can change directions.
I wanted to be a therapist since I was in junior high. I like people and wanted an occupation where I could help others.
Clients know why they are seeking therapy. I am always willing to assist them in setting goals, but I want the goals set to be something that is meaningful to them.
The first session will be gathering some information from the client and allowing us time to get to know each other. We'll discuss what brought them to therapy, expectations, etc. I'll answer any questions the client may have.
