About Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is the seat of Santa Cruz County, California. The city is situated at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains on the northern shore of Monterey Bay. The area was named by Spanish soldier Gaspar de Portola who explored the area in 1769. “Santa Cruz” means “Holy Cross” in Spanish.

The city of Santa Cruz was incorporated in 1866. It has a land area of 13 square miles. Santa Cruz has a population of 64,000 people, including 2,200 military veterans. 

The ethnic composition of the Santa Cruz population is 64% white, 21% Hispanic, 8% Asian, and 2% black. Fourteen percent of residents are foreign-born. Over 25% of people in Santa Cruz speak a foreign language at home. Santa Cruz is home to 8,900 Spanish speakers and 1,900 Chinese speakers.

Agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, technology, and tourism are the major industries in Santa Cruz. Residents earn an average annual salary of $31,600, and the median household income is $62,500. Forty-four percent of households are homeowners. Over 24% of residents live below the poverty line.

Mental Health in Santa Cruz

Between 2011 and 2013, the suicide rate for county residents was 13.7 per 100,000 people. The suicide rate for California was 10.2 per 100,000 people during this period. Santa Cruz County has a had a higher suicide rate than California since 1980.  

Santa Cruz County also has significantly higher rates of self-harm among youth. Between 2011 and 2013, residents aged 10 to 14 experienced self-harm injuries at a rate of over 150 per 100,000 kids. This rate was higher than both state and national levels.
