My Approach to Helping

Greetings, I'm Kerry Cannon, a California Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) providing remote teletherapy assessments, care coordination, referrals, and individual therapy to California residents. My focus is working alongside you as the expert on your life's happenings through the use of active and reflective listening. I can teach you coping tools like the 54321 grounding activity or Modified Lion's Breath. My approach is one of presence in non-judgmental, body-positive, culturally sensitive, and lifestyle-affirming ways.

I offer different therapeutic approaches with a preference for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Humanistic Client-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Behavior Therapy, and other strengths-based approaches to help guide the therapeutic growth process.

Individual clients I've worked alongside include youth (13yo+) to College students, Single parents, Foster parents who've adopted, and others. I've supported people employed in nursing, emergency response, animal welfare, the film industry, and other careers. Some experienced physical health challengesnew diagnosis, Depression, relationship loss, job burnout, PTSD, Addiction, and feeling fear about the unknown. Youth I have worked alongside may have struggled with Depression, ADHDADD, low self-esteem, perfectionism, distress from bullying or discrimination experiences, relationship changes, and pet loss.

My communication style is reflective and non-judgmental, yet focal in building rapport and trust. The therapeutic tone is warm and welcoming, at times direct, yet from a supportive lens. I value creativity, adaptability, and some humor to get through various life situations. My journey to becoming a therapist involved some youth experiences with my parents struggling through divorce with varying levels of emotional and financial challenges. I've received my own individual therapy for griefloss struggles. Therapy services encouraged me to dig deep, sit with uncomfortable feelings, and shift my thinking while healing. As a Clinical Social Worker, what drives me to support people is my respect for the worth of every human to make their own choices, and live life as satisfied as possible while functioning better.

For goal setting, your goal is what you want to get from the guidance of teletherapy services. Your goal is what you want to achieve to feel functionally at your best, happier, maybe more comfortable in social settings, build better relationship connections, or feel less angry and worried. I encourage the inclusion of strengths like spiritual practices, hobbies, body movement activities, expressive arts, or group support you participate in. As you achieve your goal(s), you may obtain new coping or problem-solving skills to lower the stress you're experiencing. Improving the quality of life through attention restructuring, building relationship boundaries, and gaining better motivation to engage in self-care rituals that you are comfortable with to bring more peace in your daily life are some things that could happen for you.

In an actual first teletherapy session which occurs after your Intake Assessment, each person is welcome to talk about what's on their mind. Some haven't done therapy before, so whether the discussion is about a relational barrier, something you're proud of that you achieved, sadness felt over something unexpected happening, or more focal to what your treatment goal is, you can speak your mind. For parents of youth, parents are welcome to offer some feedback during the intake appointment. I encourage parents to communicate with me as needed to ensure the safety of the youth, andor lower any risks that may be of concern for the youth's well-being. Building self-compassion and at times sitting with uncomfortable feelings isn't an easy thing to do for any of us. Please take a few deep breaths, bring a pillow, bring your pet for added comfort (but if it's pet Ziggy the Tarantula, please inform me in advance LOL), grab a coffee or snack, and obtain a location where your privacy won't be interrupted or overheard.
