My Approach to Helping
Hello, I am LaToya J. Johnson, an NYS Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 20 years of counseling experience. I earned my bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Mount St. Mary's College in 2003. I graduated with my Master's Degree in Psychology from Marist College in 2006.
It is my belief that there is no one therapeutic method that will work for every individual in every situation, so I employ a variety of theoretical approaches to meet the emotional, mental, physical, social, spiritual, career, and economic needs of my clients. The most common theoretical approaches I use in my work are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Trauma Informed Care, and Person Center Therapy.
I can provide both therapy and assessment services for adolescents, young adults, individuals, couples, and families using an integrated approach specific to the unique needs of each client. Since 2003, I have worked in various settings and with a culturally diverse client base for long-term therapy and brief crisis interventions. I have provided care to individuals with chronic mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, PTSD, racial identity issues, relationship concerns, intellectual disabilities, and substance abuse.
My goal is to create an atmosphere of trust and acceptance where I can assist you on your journey to the process of self-acceptance, emotional stability, and the behavioral changes you desire.
I have been a “helper” for as long as I can remember. I have always been that person that people find very easy to talk to, so my passion for Psychotherapy, Life Coaching, and Financial Coaching comes as a surprise to no one. What drives me to continue this work are the small changes that my clients make that have significant impacts on their quality of life.
I believe that every person has a right to live a happy and fulfilled life. My role as your therapist is to assist you in making progress toward your definition of what fulfillment means in your life.
During the first session, our focus will be discussing the concerns that have prompted you to begin the process of therapy. I will give you information on my background and therapeutical approach, and ultimately you will decide if you wish to engage in therapy with me as your Psychotherapist. I firmly believe in the importance of clienttherapist compatibility being vital to the therapeutic process.
