My Approach to Helping
My name is Laura Block and I have been a mental health therapist for 21 years. I have worked with children, adolescents and adults. My experiences include working in residential treatment, a community outpatient setting and private practice. Areas of specific interest of mine are trauma and PTSD, and substance abuse.
I am committed to providing a safe and nonjudgmental space to allow my clients to explore their complex issues. It is critical to promote an environment that encourages the sharing of concerns, feelings and all other issues that may be impacting one's life. Through a collaborative process, partnering with my clients to assist in exploring and processing present-day challenges or unresolved trauma is key and what is continuously strived for.
As a therapist I have worked with a wide range of personal challenges including depression, anxiety, domestic violence, substance abuse and trauma and PTSD.
As a therapist I use a straightforward yet empowering approach to help people heal through methods that focus on the individual's strengths, values and goals.
In my early 20's I had decided that I wanted to be a therapist. It took until I was 40 years old with 5 children to go back to school to get my Masters. I have worked with children as young as 4 years old up to an 80 year old WWI veteran. I have never stopped loving doing this work as everyone has a story and is a puzzle. I learn from everyone I have worked with.
I guide my client in identifying maladaptive behaviors that are causing conflict or upset in their lives. From there we set goals that are relatively brief and present-focused, while maintaining motivation, understanding emotions and changing unhelpful behavior.
During the first session I would utilize the time to establish rapport and discuss the expectations of the client as well as the guidelines of Path.
