My Approach to Helping
I believe that no two people experience the world in exactly the same way, and that many of those differences are often labeled as a negative simply because they do not fit into whatever current definition of “normal” dominates mainstream culture. I want to empower those individuals to embrace their experience of the world as valid and identify new ways to successfully navigate the world on their terms.
I consider myself an eclectic and humanist therapist -- I draw on whatever is best going to serve the person I'm working with all while assuming the best in them. I rely on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Narrative Theory quite a bit, as I believe our thoughts and the stories we tell ourselves are powerful ---- the ability to change them even a little to give ourselves the upper hand has the potential to be life changing. I also lean into Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), as I like how it allows for us to account for the less than desirable circumstances we sometimes find ourselves in without placing blame. Plus, it allows me to incorporate Mindfulness skills and other behavioral skills that some folks find extremely helpful.
