My Approach to Helping
If you are reading this page then the likelihood is that you are searching for something. What we search for can change throughout our lifetime and at times we could all do with some assistance in recognizing what it is we're actually seeking.
Some search for a better understanding of themselves or support in processing the present or the past. Some search for acceptance or change, some search for the tools to manage the difficulties of life. Ultimately, what I think we are all searching for are the best ways to make the most of our lives; and sometimes this search can get tiring and even a little lonely.
I understand that deciding to engage in personal therapy can feel daunting - the thought of meeting a stranger and discussing personal material might seem very strange. This is a perfectly natural feeling to have and my promise to you is that I will do my best to provide you with the space, the time and the support that you need to feel comfortable enough to tell your story and together we'll take it from there.
Initial stage: what to expect
Once I receive contact from you, together we will arrange a time to meet for an assessment session.
An assessment session is where we will have the opportunity to meet in person and to discuss what's going on for you at present. We can then explore what might be the best way forward, all in strictest confidence. The session will last for fifty minutes.
This session will also give you an opportunity to see how comfortable you feel with me, which will be an important factor in your search for the right therapist.
Also, it's important to note that there's no obligation to continue with therapy after this initial session, the decision will always be yours to make.
Middle stage: what to expect
If you decide you'd like to begin ongoing therapy with me, together we will arrange a weekly appointment, that, ideally, occurs on the same day and at the same time and each week. Each session will last for fifty minutes.
There may be days where you leave sessions feeling good, like a weight has been lifted and there may be days where you leave feeling unsettled, depending on what we've opened up together. Whatever the case may be, through the difficult times, as well as the good, we will weather them together.
The final stage of therapy: what to expect
The length of time you choose to engage in therapy is totally up to you and ending therapy will always be your decision, based on when you feel the time is right.
Once you let me know you're considering ending, we will agree a date and in the final weeks we will process the ending together and recap on what we've learnt and experienced along the way.
What I can offer
What I offer is a unique therapeutic experience, which we will shape together and the space we create will be there to hold you as you grow. Short-term and long-term work is possible, as well as a variety of therapeutic approaches to utilize. I work with individuals and also provide couples counselling, as well as Skype and telephone sessions.
The way I work with clients aims to promote a collaborative environment and above all else, what I can offer and what I can promise you is that I will be human, just like you.
A note for the reader:
Engaging in therapy is a journey that can really be transformative; providing the space for you to explore yourself and how you want to be in this world, whilst being supported every step of the way. Taking the step towards gaining therapeutic support is a brave move closer to the YOU that you want to experience.
