My Approach to Helping

I believe that my mission in life is to help others by providing the space in which they can share their struggles and concerns without judgment. Life is difficult, and more than anything else, I think we all crave to be listened to. I enjoy listening, and I like to help others to listen, too. By listening carefully we can create deep connection with others. Strong connection helps make life a bit easier and more enjoyable.

Being a therapist has been a dream of mine ever since I was in middle school and my brother brought his introduction to psychology textbook home from college! I love to understand why we all do the things we do, and I enjoy helping others to understand themselves and those around them better, too.

More Info About My Practice

Maureen McElroy Counseling LLC is a boutique private practice conveniently located in downtown Bethesda, adjacent to a public parking garage and in walking distance to Bethesda Metro. Therapy fees may be paid by cash, check, or credit card. While insurance may not be used as a form of payment, you may submit invoices for reimbursement if your plan allows. Appointments are available during both daytime and evenings.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I offer individual therapy for those seeking to understand themselves and others better, couple therapy for those who want to improve their communication with each other, and family therapy for family members of all ages looking to strengthen their relationships. As a therapist and as a Certified Parent Educator, I have helped hundreds of parents address their parenting challenges. In addition, experience in the field of gerontology makes me uniquely qualified to work with older adults. I am eager to work with women dealing with the challenges of an "empty nest." I also feel a calling to work with those dealing with issues of grief and loss.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Wise and courageous are words I use to describe people who go to therapy. Many people seek help with housekeeping, care of their children, care of their yard. They seek thoughts from professionals regarding home decor and food choices. I think it only makes sense that people would consult a professional when dealing with important aspects of their life, including how they feel on a day-to-day basis and the health of their relationships.
