My Approach to Helping
Hi, I'm Melissa Galica, I hold an LPC license for the state of Texas.
I hold the strong belief that people are perfectly imperfect. They are beautiful and spectacular but can also become stuck, unable to live a fulfilling life. That’s where I come in.
As a passionate and certified Mental Health Counselor, my experience allows me to understand the best ways to address each client’s needs in an effective manner. I am flexible in my approach and use collaboration as the basis of my therapy.
As a counselor, the therapies I use often include CBT, DBT, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, and narrative therapy. I typically work with young adults 18-26, mothers (prenatal, postpartum), the LGBTQIA+ community, and those suffering from religious trauma.
I am a doer, I love a plan, an experiment, something to try to see what happens. Movement and reframing are instrumental to mental health and wellness.
I fell into counseling, my first passion is teaching at the university level, sociology and, women and gender studies. The themes I love to teach are themes that I see in counseling and counseling really is a lot like teaching, good teachers ask pointed questions so that someone understands the content. Good counseling consists of asking pointed questions, to heal emotional wounds and find good coping mechanisms.
A client's goals have to be by their own design, I feel it is my job to ask pointed questions about the steps to get to the end goal and help to some degree with accountability. Ultimately what goal and how one gets there is up to the client.
The first one or two sessions, also known as intake sessions, are a fact-finding mission to learn about you, your history, and your goals and expectations for therapy. There will also be some administrative paperwork regarding boundaries, legal requirements, and limitations. Keeping in mind your therapy goals, the doors are wide open, I am a multi-modal practitioner which means we can use lots of options to get where you want to go.
