My Approach to Helping
Being a teenager can be difficult...parenting one can be even more challenging!
I am a family therapist who has years of experience working with teenagers, their parents, and their whole family. I work with teenagers and parents who have anxiety, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), school avoidance, autism, suicidality or those who self-harm. Although I work with many teenagers individually, I find it effective to provide parent coaching as well to help support mutual understanding and support throughout the family. Ideally, the whole family will eventually attend together.
I work in a variety of ways and try to inject humor, movement, books, art, and videos into our sessions...anything that can encourage interactions between parents and kids instead of just sitting and talking for an hour! Safety is always my first concern, and supporting parents and kids in understanding how to create a safe environment is paramount. Beyond that, I work from a strengths-based perspective. I believe part of my role is to help figure out what has worked in the past and what we can learn from that to create success in the present. I also support teenagers and their parents in determining how to communicate effectively with each other so they can have a more peaceful family life.
